Australian Frequent Flyer Flight Club tutorial

A short AFF Flight Club tutorial: book a flexible Qantas fare during a double Status Credits promotion, hold a Flight Credit, then choose your real trip later.

This Australian Frequent Flyer Flight Club tutorial explains the flexible-ticket and Flight Credit method behind AFF’s double Status Credits discussions. If the name is new to you, start with what Qantas Flight Club means.

The sequence below follows the author’s method in the full AFF double-status guide. It lets you make the original booking during a promotion and choose the actual trip later. Read the terms of the specific promotion and fare before making a booking.

1. Register and check the dates

Register for the Qantas promotion and select double Status Credits where a reward choice is offered. Every traveller should register and have their Frequent Flyer number on the booking. Record the booking deadline and eligible travel period.

Your original booking must meet the promotion’s requirements. Later travel also needs to fit the eligible travel dates; creating a Flight Credit does not extend that period.

2. Book an eligible, fully flexible ticket

During the promotion’s booking window, choose an eligible one-way Flex Economy fare whose rules allow cancellation for a Flight Credit without fees. Check the actual fare conditions before paying.

For this method, include the same people who will travel on your replacement booking. The author’s initial ticket was Melbourne → Sydney for one passenger; the eventual trip was Perth → London.

3. Wait at least 24 hours, then request a Flight Credit

The author waits at least 24 hours after booking, then cancels for a Flight Credit before departure. This timing is part of the method described in the guide, rather than a claim that every promotion has a published 24-hour rule.

Save the confirmation, original booking reference, credit value and expiry date. Requesting a credit is different from taking a cash refund: the credit keeps the ticket’s value available for a later booking.

4. Redeem the credit for your real trip

When your plans are clearer, open the Qantas Flight Credit page, enter the credit reference and surname, and use its Find Flights flow. Qantas says you cannot apply a Flight Credit to a new booking made through the ordinary flight search page or the Qantas App.

Keep the same passengers, choose travel inside both the promotion’s eligible period and the credit’s validity, and apply the credit to the new fare. In the author’s method, the replacement booking costs more than the credit and uses its full value in one booking; you pay the difference.

Qantas’s general credit rules now allow multiple bookings and lower fares. That broader flexibility does not establish whether splitting a credit preserves a DSC bonus, so it is not the scenario demonstrated here.

5. Fly and check your account

Fly the eligible itinerary, then check your Frequent Flyer activity for the base earnings and promotional bonus. Keep the original booking, credit and replacement confirmation together so you can check the details if the expected bonus does not appear.

In the author’s worked example, the Perth → London return was rebooked three months later using the Flight Credit from the initial Melbourne → Sydney booking. Double Status Credits were credited after travel.

The details that matter

  • Two deadlines: the promotion’s travel period and the Flight Credit’s expiry must both work for your trip.
  • The original booking date: standard Qantas credits from bookings made from 1 October 2021 require booking and travel within 12 months of that date.
  • The fare rules: fees attached to the original fare can apply when you redeem the credit.
  • The travellers: Qantas credits are non-transferable and name changes are not permitted.
  • The bonus: a community report or a working Flight Credit alone does not confirm eligibility under a different promotion.
